Tonight the Buccaneers of Jack Britt (2-2, 1-0) travel to neighboring South View (3-1, 2-0) to play in an early-season conference shodown. The Tigers have been impressive this season with wins over Wilmington Laney and Terry Sanford while the Buccaneers bring a two-game winning streak to "The Jungle" with wins over Cape Fear and Hoke County.
The JV and Varsity teams start at 430pm and 700pm respectively. We have two goals for tonight: have more Purple-and-Gold than Black-and-Orange at the game and walk out of "The Jungle" 2-0 in the Mid-South conference. Bundle up and come out and support the Buccaneers.
“What a difference a week makes.” Coach Combs spoke volumes about the second week of the season for the Buccaneers. After starting the season 0-2 with losses to Hoke County and Richmond County, the Buccaneers battled hard this week to even up their record to 2-2 and 1-0 in the Mid-South Conference.
In last night’s 6-1 win over Hoke County, the bats finally came alive. In the pre-game coaches’ meeting, Coach Doty remarked how he felt like the progress and hard work was going to take shape in the opening day rematch against the Bucks. He was spot on as the Buccaneers pounded out 12 hits with three hits coming off of the bat of senior Nick Nagowski [3-4 – 3(1B), RBI]. Seniors Christian Lugo [2-3 – 2(1B)] and Matt McKnight [2-4 – 2(1B), RBI] as well as sophomore Dustin Adams [2-2 – 1B, 2B, R, 2(BB)] added two hits a piece. Senior Benny Torres had a notable game going 1-4 with two walks, a stolen base, and two runs scored.
In other news, the JV team also defeated Hoke County in the earlier game by a score of 7-2. This evened the JV record to 2-2 and 0-1 in the conference. The Buccaneers are excited about the upcoming week as they face neighboring South View on Tuesday, cross-town rival Pine Forest on Friday, and the Fighting Scots of Scotland County on Saturday. Please continue to come out and support your Buccaneers as they work toward their goal of winning the first baseball conference championship in school history.
