Last evening's chilly temperatures did not affect the right arm of starting pitcher Nick Nagowski. The senior threw an impressive complete game shutout that was highlighted by 14 strikeouts. The top of the Buccaneers' lineup started to show positive signs with key hits by seniors Christian Lugo [2-3, 2B, RBI] and Benny Torres [3-3, 2(1B), 2B, RBI]. The victory last night improves the team's record to 1-2 and 1-0 in the conference. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of the night, for the players and coaches, was the pre-game speech delivered by Dr. Jack Britt. Once again, the baseball program would like to thank Dr. and Mrs. Britt, as well as Mr. Fields, for participating in last night's first pitch. The next "first pitch" will be delivered by our principal Ms. Garison on Friday, March 18th when the Buccaneers take on the Trojans of Pine Forest.
In the earlier game yesterday, the JV teamTomorrow the Buccaneers will travel to Lumberton to take on the Lumberton Pirates. The game time for the varsity game (away) will be 530 pm; the JV game will be home at 530 pm.
The first week of baseball has concluded and the Jack Britt Baseball program finished 1-3 on the week. Congratulations to Coach Morehead for his first win as the JV Head Coach as the JV Buccaneers defeated Hoke County on Tuesday by a score of 11-0.
As for the Varsity team, "Player of the Week" honors goes to sophomore Dustin Adams who threw four scoreless innings this week in his two appearances. In his first appearance against Hoke County on Tuesday, Dustin came into the game with the bases loaded and with no outs. He faced the precarious situation by striking out the side. His performance in the fourth inning was followed up the next inning by striking out the first two batters. Dustin finished the week allowing only three hits, striking out eight, and walking two in four innings of work. At the plate, Dustin also walked two times in his six plate appearances.
The Buccaneers look to improve upon their first week's performance. The coming week will bring Cape Fear High School in the Mid-South Conference opener (Tuesday) as well as Lumberton (Thursday). The week will finish with a re-match of opening day's game against the Bucks of Hoke County (Friday). Check the schedule for times and locations.

There was certainly a good crowd at Jack Britt Field on Tuesday evening to watch the Buccaneers take on the Bucks of Hoke County. Unfortunately for the Jack Britt fans, the game did not turn out as they hoped. The Hoke County Bucks jumped out to an early lead on some key hits in the first inning. Although Nick Nagowski did not have his best stuff on this night, he fought hard well into the third inning before being replaced by sophomore Dustin Adams. Adams threw three stellar innings, striking out seven while only walking one. Brandon Culbreth closed out the 7th inning allowing one run on two hits.
Although the hits were hard to come by for the Buccaneers, starting shortstop Christian Lugo drove in the team's only RBI with his first-inning double down the left field line. Coach Combs, the hitting coach for Jack Britt, remarked after the game, "We will come back out again tomorrow and continue to implement our philiosophy. We will stay the course."
The Buccaneers will have no time to linger over their opening day loss, as they travel to Richmond County to play the Raiders at 630 pm on Thursday. This will be the final non-conference tune-up before the Buccaneers face the the Cape Fear Colts on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 700 pm.
